MIT Course: Sustainability of Materials in the Built Environment

Overview

This course delves into the sustainability of materials used in construction, emphasizing the environmental impact and innovative uses of materials in the built environment. The subject will cover a wide range of topics that include modern and ancient materials used in construction, materials selection and efficiency, materials characterization, durability and deterioration, carbon footprint and life cycle assessment (LCA). The main goal of the class is to stimulate students to explore materials sustainability and environmental impact through design thinking and projects in the lab. In addition to the course’s lab, theoretical, and systems components, we plan to provide a spectrum of industry perspectives and current real-world case studies (guest lectures and site visits).
