The hydration reaction, which occurs when cement powder is mixed with water, can dictate the sustainability and durability of concrete. Yet, this reaction has remained notoriously difficult to observe.

Now, a team at MIT—including CSHub's Faculty Director Franz-Josef Ulm—has developed an approach using laser imaging techniques that can visualize the reaction in real-time. In this MIT News story, the team explains how their new approach promises higher performing and lower-emitting concrete.
