The International Code Council (ICC)'s structural design codes are specific to building type and geographical region -- an approach which works well in rural environments but not in urban areas where local building geometries have the potential to double wind loads. This brief examines how statistical tools can be utilized to capture the complexity of cities comprising hundreds of thousands of buildings and reduce them to models of tens of buildings. With the smaller groupings, wind flow simulations can be easily and efficiently applied, providing more accurate distributions of wind loads. Read more.
