MIT News: Stiffer Roads Could Improve Truck Fuel Efficiency

MIT Researchers have found that stiffer pavements reduce transportation emissions
June 11, 2020

Though roads may seem rigid beneath one’s feet, under the weight of a truck they are quite pliant. In a paper in the Transportation Research Record, CSHub researchers investigate how pavement deformation can cause vehicles—especially trucks—to consume more fuel as they drive. They find that if pavements were made stiffer, transportation emissions would fall by 0.5 percent in the U.S. over 50 years. Learn more in this MIT News Piece.
